Staverton and Hilperton are to bear the brunt of the housing growth of Trowbridge over the next couple of decades, if plans by WC get approved.
The council has decided its preferred options for housing as part of the Local Plan Review, with a site it describes as North Trowbridge, the area between the B3105 in Staverton and the river, being allocated for 500 houses with a new primary school.
The government is insisting on a big house-building programme in Wiltshire, and because Wiltshire Council’s administration has lost control of the planning process developers are able to build in previously protected areas. Allocating large sites and giving developers whatever they want is an attempt by the council to regain that control.
Due to changes in government rules, the new estates won’t include much ‘affordable’ housing, so won’t be local homes for local people.
The Staverton Triangle area near Airsprung, where an application to build was refused a couple of years ago, was also considered by WC planners but not included on the priority list.
Developers have declined to develop brownfield sites such as Bowyers in Trowbridge. Also the previously allocated Ashton Park site on the West Ashton side of the town, which was to have included 2,500 houses plus a secondary school, has not been built.
On the Hilperton side 2,100 dwellings and a secondary school would be built under the new plans.
No new roads will be built apart from those required to access the developments, so the existing network will have to cope with the increase in traffic. The proposals will be agreed by the WC ‘cabinet’ on Tuesday, and will then go out for consultation.

It is a disgrace that Wilts Council has not managed to produce a five year plan. This puts everyone who lives in Wiltshire at risk of a nearby development that they have no control over – not even a voice. What has the Council been doing for the last decade? It’s about time we voted in a new administration.
The traffic through our village is dreadful , we live on the main rd through the village of Staverton so we see just how bad things are so unless a bypass can be put in place the village is going to be overwhelmed with traffic , and walking along the pavement is like taking your life in your hands at times and as for the pedestrian crossing , well what can I say half the time the traffic doesn’t stop or even acknowledge the crossing is there.
More beautiful land gobbled up by WC I too live on the main road through Staverton, beyond covid the traffic is backed up both sides on the bridge polluting our tiny villages. Yes drivers totally ignore people you when you try to cross the road. If your trying to pull out of your drive to join the road you are there for ages. When you do eventually see a gap drivers zoom right up the back of your car swearing and angry that you have caused the 5 seconds delay and as for the lorries zooming by they mount the pavement before the will slow down. This is going to be horrendous for the locals.
We have no infrastructure round here to cope with 2000 houses, 4400 extra people 4000 extra cars what the hell are you thinking about WC.
This is such a dreadful idea for people living in Staverton and we will be relying on you, Trevor , to fight our corner and not let this building go ahead . It will become a nightmare crossing the Staverton Bridge with so many more cars , and beautiful countryside will be destroyed. Isn’t this supposed to be a small quiet village? That’s why we moved here!
I find this an absolute disgrace an heart breaking with our climate change at stake and when there is house up for sale an unlived or unlivable in due to people unable to pay the prices. Instead of distorying more country side and wasting money that could be put into restoring the town and roads plant tree and trees the country an giving back to nature, make a change an do something good for the plant an take control make action.
I don’t understand how the council can allow 2500 houses to be built next door to me , I bought my house to be in the country side, not on an estate , thats why I left Trowbridge , I have put in planning permission 3 times over the last few years for annex, as I have my daughter and to granchildren living with me, was turned down flat , as I was told this land on my side of the road would never be built on as it’s green field land , so my question to the council is , is there a rule for one and not for the another? And as a lot of ever people have stated, Staverton Road is already congested morning and at night, all the lorrys use it as they cannot go through Bradford on Avon so how much traffic are you going to create with your 2500 houses ( 4000) + cars ?? I would love to hear your reply .
If this plan goes ahead like it will most likely do so! As part of the builders plans it should include the reopening of the village railway halt to help with commuting to work to places Such as Swindon Westbury and the other towns there’s going to be a need more than ever for more public transport.
