Holt Police nab alleged lead nickers

Wiltshire Police report  that two arrests have been made following a series of thefts of lead from roofs in the village, including at Firlawn House and the school.

The police ‘letter box’, which allows people to leave messages for the neighbourhood policing team, has been moved to the Post Office following its being vandalised at its previous position on the village hall.

The police have also been mounting speed checks on the main road through Holt.  Fewer motorists are now breaking the law so the campaign to slow them down seems to have been successful.

Village Parking to be Examined

August 27th, 2010 by trevorcarbin
Comment?

Parking in the villages of West Wiltshire will be reviewed in the autumn.  Council officers will be looking at the roads to see if yellow lines or other restrictions are needed.

This should have been part of a wider review of parking in the District to include the towns as well, except for Bradford which has already been done.  However as the council is also looking to increase parking charges in the towns, and as someone in County Hall has noticed that high parking charges could affect on-street and residential parking, that part of the review has been put off till next year.

Please get in touch if there are any problem areas in your village which need to be considered in the review.

Speed limit review - Holt wins concession

August 9th, 2010 by trevorcarbin

Holt Parish Council has won a slight concession from Wiltshire Council on speed limits in the parish.  The B3106 Holt to Staverton road had been recommended by WC to have a 50mph limit as a change from the 60mph national limit which covers it at the moment.  Holt PC said it should be 30mph as signing it at 50 might encourage drivers to see this as a safe speed.  A 30mph limit would also make the road less hostile for pedestrians and cyclists.  WC has replied by saying it would be prepared to go to 40mph.  This is a minor victory but doesn’t really address the concerns of the parish.

The PC had also asked for reductions in speed limits on the B3107 Bradford to Melksham road on the approaches to Holt.  Wiltshire Council says it won’t do that and is sticking with its plans to keep the 60mph national limit on the road, apart from through Holt as now and with an extension of the Bradford 30mph limit out to the cemetery.  However WC has invited the PC to make the case as to why the rest of the B3107 should have a lower limit.

Not enough crashes on B3109

Wiltshire Council has refused a request from South Wraxall Parish Council for a lower speed limit on the B3109 as it passes through the parish between Fiveways junction and Wildcross.

Their justification for this is that government guidance says that ‘high quality roads with few bends, junctions or accesses with an accident rate of less than 35 per 100 million vehicle kilometers’ should have the national limit of 60mph.

The accident rate on the section of the B3109 between Fiveways and Wildcross is 18.1 per 100 million vehicle kilometers, whilst the section north of Fiveways towards Corsham has a figure of 19.4.

Traffic manager Dave Bullock has though invited the parish council to submit more evidence as to why the road should have a lower limit.  This would need to go in by the end of September.

Wiltshire Council has suggested that the section of the B3109 from Wildcross towards Bradford as far as the existing 50mph limit should also be reduced from 60mph to 50, and the Parish Council has supported that so the change is likely to be made later in the year.
